Facebook and Twitter Accounts Comparison for Coca-Cola and Pepsi

A Facebook and Twitter Accounts Comparison for Two Well Known Soft Drink Companies: Coca-Cola and Pepsi

Some call it soda, pop, or just coke or coca-cola, but we all know the major players. [1] The battle between Coke and Pepsi is older than we are; CNN Money even named it “one of the greatest business rivalries of all time.” Certainly the two cola giants are iconic brands, and both aim to bring their best social strategies to Twitter.[1] This is a comparison of two social media tools for the two soft drink brands: Coca-cola and Pepsi.

Facebook Engagement: Coca-Cola and Pepsi
Coca-cola leads in the “Engagement Category” on Facebook.  The SimplyMeasured.com’s free demo tool was used to compare two competitor’s (i.e., Coca-cola and Pepsi) Facebook pages.  Coca-cola had 171, 000 vs. 0 for Pepsi, see Figure 1 below.

Facebook Page Fans: Coca-cola and Pepsi
Coca-cola is the clear leader over Pepsi with 90.1 million compared to 34 million for Pepsi.  Coca-cola enjoys a 165 % more fans than the next best brand Pepsi, see Figure 1 below.

The next part of this blog will focus on specific Twitter account statistics for both Coca-cola and Pepsi brands.

Coca-cola has a Klout score of 91.9, see Figure 4 below.  Pepsi has a Klout score of  88.6.   Coca-cola clearly is more influential than Pepsi.   According to the Klout Score website “The Klout Score is a number between 1-100 that represents your influence. The more influential you are, the higher your Klout Score. “[2]

In short, Coca-cola is the more popular carbonated soft drink brand when one compares it to Pepsi using two of the more common Social Media tools: Facebook and Twitter.  If one compares Coca-cola to Pepsi on the numbers of lifetime tweets and the Klout score --- one would conclude that Coca-cola is a more active brand than Pepsi.  Coca-cola has a consistently entertaining content and a marketing strategy the impresses and manages to raise a smile on frequent occasions.  If you are a baby boomer you will never forget the coca-cola TV commercials that were on TV that were simply impressive and entertaining such as “I would like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony...I would like to buy the world a coke and keep it company…”  On the flipside Pepsi has had a few winning tv commercials” (but not as many as Coca-cola) the famous commercial was starring Michael Jackson dancing and singing to the tune of Billy Jean but singing about Pepsi "... is your whole generation."[3]

  1. Personally I prefer coca cola or even better Mexican coca cola which most grocery stores carry in the ethnic foods aisle.
